Wedding Diary

October 11 Saturday

  Lunch at Ferme Saint Simeon
It's a long flight from Dallas to Paris, and it was morning when we arrived. After a long nap, we went to one of Paris’ excellent restaurants. Following the dinner, we made our way to the famous Hemingway bar & Ritz Club for after-dinner cocktails.

October 12 Sunday
We left Paris by helicopter. Flying over Omaha beach, our minds went back to that desperate struggle to establish a beach head back on June 6, 1944. The five-star restaurant we went to for lunch has a helipad. Apparently, other famous people (get it: other famous people), also arrive there for lunch. Kerensa spilt her water all over the table — confirming once again that we were meant to be together.

After successfully completing three of the eight courses, we bid our farewell. We were sure that the waiter had mixed feelings about our departure. On the one hand, he was relieved to be rid of the dorks. On the other, he was insulted that we did not complete our meal.

Romantic champagne hot air balloon ride at Chateau d'Esclimont

The magnificent Chateau d'Esclimont, one hour outside Paris near Chartres and Rambouillet

October 13 Monday
The hot air balloon ride was spectacular. We had a panoramic view of the castle grounds and the surrounding countryside. Afterward, it was back to the Ritz for a fabulous dinner.

October 14 Tuesday
Chanel has ten private shows a year. Of course, we slept through ours. Never fear! We still had a great day with our own private shopping guide. Kerensa had been practicing her credit card quick draw for months, and this is where all her training finally paid off. After a day of shopping we arrived back at the Ritz where Herb had a much deserved nervous break down.

Herb’s assistant, Linda, had gone to a great deal of trouble to get us tickets to the Moulin Rouge. We blew it off (don’t tell her). Oh well, we will certainly be back to Paris.

October 15 Wednesday
Kerensa took pity on her intended by bringing him back a Big Mac. We took a break during the day to rest up for our flight that night to the Seychelles.

Herb talked to Marty about True Beginnings business. After the conversation he asked Marty to call Linda in Dallas to have her call the Ritz in Paris (yes, the hotel we were staying at) to confirm our limo reservations. Why? Because he hates Tom Fool questions! That’s why! We know what you’re thinking: “Does Kerensa know what she’s really getting into???”

October 16 Thursday
The aerial view of the Seychelles is unbelievable. When we arrived, we were whisked away by helicopter to Fregate. Herb slept. Kerensa explored the beaches. That night we had a relaxed dinner in our villa overlooking the Indian (sorry Mr. Custer) Ocean.

October 17 Friday
Today we went to two beaches. To reach them we had to climb down from the overhanging cliffs above. When Herb had at last taken the last step down, Kerensa was already playing in the waves. She had to use her knowledge of the fireman’s carry to get him back to the top. Oh yes, there was a second beach. Herb is recovering nicely in the ICU unit of the Fregate hospital, (OK it’s a joke).

October 18 Saturday

Keith in Nairobi, happy he's almost finished lugging the dress.

Kerensa's family with Keith and Ray — we're almost there!

Victor, Beverly, Kara, Eric, Keith, and Ray arrive by plane. Kerensa was grateful to have Kara (her maid-of-honor and slave until after the wedding) here to do her every bidding. Keith had lugged Kerensa’s wedding dress for forty-eight hours straight and was rewarded with a big smile as she hugged her dress.

Afterwards, we strolled along the beach. We will cherish no memory more than holding hands and feeling wet sand between our toes as the waves lapped up covering our knees. We were accompanied by a retinue of crabs helping us celebrate our good fortune.

October 19 Sunday

Group photo after the 4 hour long dinner.
We went to breakfast at the lobby restaurant overlooking the ocean — just us. Sometimes just being alive with the one you love is paradise.

That night we had the longest welcoming dinner in recorded history — some four hours. It was good to be with family on this happiest of occasions.

October 20 Monday

The whole group (minus Linda who was still recovering from the boat ride over).
M & M arrived early by helicopter while Ruth, Jane, and Linda arrived by boat a couple of hours later. Jane and Linda were more than a little green after a choppy ride. However, Ruth was unaffected and beaming with delight. She questioned “what is our species primordial past that causes man to leave the safety of shore to venture so far out?” The question remains unanswered along with the puzzle of why we leave the earth to go to the moon. We don’t know the answer to either question, but we're grateful that we are this way.

October 21 Tuesday

Sunset Cruise
We went Scuba Diving and it was wonderful — you could see forever! We did see some white tip sharks, but fortunately, Herb brought his California Bar card so they left us alone (professional courtesy you know). Later that evening we went on a sunset cruise with the whole family. You haven’t lived until you have witnessed a sunset on the Indian Ocean.

After the cruise we had a beach BBQ.

October 22 Wednesday - The Rehearsal Dinner

Kerensa and Herb

The Whole Gang

Vic, Eric, and Ray went game fishing and caught Mahi-Mahi, Rainbow Runners, and Barracuda. It was a little choppy so they were all green when they triumphantly arrived back at the Marina.

M & M went sea shell hunting. The rest of us vegged.

We didn’t have a rehearsal, but undeterred we did have a rehearsal dinner. Toasts all around!

October 23 Thursday

Morning of Wedding

The Wedding
MORE -->>
Kerensa kissed Herb goodbye for the day and off she went for a day of relaxing messages, facials, and nails. Not knowing what to do with himself without his best friend around (yeah, I know, this is making you sick), Herb had lunch with Ruth and went for a swim.

Here Comes the Bride started and Herb strained to see his soul mate come around the corner — but no Kerensa. She had forgotten her bouquet. Kara ran back to the villa, retrieved it, and ran back. The music resumed — but still no Kerensa. She had forgotten her vows. Her Dad ran back this time.

Meanwhile Herb was composing what he was going to say to the guests after being left at the alter.

When she came around the corner at last, Herb turned pale and began to tremble. He had never before seen any human being so lovely. He lost himself in the angelic scene as she strolled down the isle, arm-in-arm with Vic. Herb glanced briefly at Vic as they exchanged Kerensa’s hand.

He was swollen with pride. The relationship between a father and his daughter is unlike any other. He will always be her hero. She will always be the little girl that he comforted when she skinned her knee. Vic had mixed emotions this whole year. A brief six months before he had given away his youngest daughter, Kara. Both girls loved and admired their father. Herb wanted to take time out to reassure his father-in-law that he was not losing a daughter but gaining a son-in-law. But, on second thought, decided that news might push him over the edge.

Kara, Kerensa’s maid-of-honor was beautiful as she stood by her sister’s side. After the ceremony, the staff had to mop the floor from her tears.

Matthew looked tall and handsome standing by his father’s side. For the twentieth time he felt his pockets for the ring and vows. Matt and his recent bride Michelle were the perfect couple — they had been married in Santa Fe two months prior.

There is much ado in life, but in the end one’s children are the sum total. Herb felt that way about Matthew, the poet and Daniel, the scholar. He loved them both with all his heart and his chest swelled with pride whenever he saw them.

We stood hand-in-hand as the Justice-of-the-Peace, silhouetted by the Indian Ocean below, officiated. A light rain, portending good luck for a marriage, began to fall.

We had worked long and hard on our vows and were determined that they would be much more than words. They are, after all, a sacred oath — the constitution, as it were, for our lives together. Each word was bound by our honor and we will not break our vows. They will be framed and receive a prominent place on the wall of our home.

Afterward, Herb presented his wife to the teary eyed guests and congratulatory hugs and handshakes were exchanged. This was the happiest moment of our lives.

After the ceremony, toasts were made by the pool. When the orchestra played Lady in White, we danced, lost in each others arms.

The guests included Ruth, Vic, Beverly, Mama Holt, Eric, Michelle, Jane, Keith, and Ray. We all enjoyed the extended dinner and following dinner, we cut the cakes and fed each other. This is indeed paradise.

And so ended our beginning.

October 24 Friday

Sharing our happiness with a new friend
Most of us went on an excursion to the neighboring islands. The sea was calm but it rained most of the day. Kerensa and Herb went diving, Kara and Eric snorkeled, and the rest of the gang toured the Island of Praslin.

It was a much deserved lazy day as we got use to the term “Mr. and Mrs. Vest.”

October 25 Saturday
Vic, Beverly, Kara, Eric, Mama Holt, Keith, and Ray left on the twin Otter that the Seychelles meretriciously refer to as their 'airline'. We had spent the entire day with them, and Herb saw Kerensa’s sentimental side as she cried on his shoulder while their plane bounced down the grassy runway on take off.

That evening the rest of us got together for dinner at the Pirates Bar.

October 26 Sunday
At 7:00 am we went to the helo pad to see M & M off for their second honeymoon (Paris), before flying back to Santa Fe. Yes, Kerensa cried.

At 9:00 am, we again went to the helo pad to see Mama Ruth, Jane, and Linda off to London where they would take the train through the channel to Paris. From there they would fly back to the Big D. Why do you bother to ask? Yes, Kerensa cried again (remind Herb to carry more hankies).

The rest of the day was pure honeymoon and none of your business.

October 27 Monday
We couldn’t leave without revisiting the magical site of our wedding. It is located on top of the hill overlooking the ocean and the rest of the island and we relived every moment — again recited our vows. (We had recited them each night to each other since the wedding.) And we danced one more time to the song that was playing in our minds.

It was 9:00 am at the helo pad when our time came. We now know how Adam and Eve must have felt when they left the Garden of Eden.

I can’t believe you would ask that! Of course we will be back! In fact, in our minds, we will never leave.

We arrived in Rome at 7:00 pm absolutely exhausted, checked into the Westin Excelsior, and went straight to bed.

God, how could we be so lucky.

October 28 Tuesday
It is obvious that when Gibbons wrote of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, he had not witnessed Kerensa at Valentinos. Today, she did more to strengthen the Euro than all of the Central Banks of the world combined. We are expecting a call from the U.S. Federal Reserve any minute pleading with her to give the dollar a break. Meanwhile, Herb, having advanced warning of the monetary fiasco, made a fortune in currency speculation. Unfortunately, it will not be enough to mitigate the damage.

From Gucci, to Prada, toValentino, to Versace, each one, in turn, had to close their doors after her departure for lack of inventory. Kerensa taught Herb a curious economic fact originally discovered by American politicians: “It’s not how much you spend that counts. Its how much money you are saving”. Buoyed by the revelation, Herb returned to the hotel content that he had saved a bundle.

October 29 Wednesday
When one is in Rome for a few days, one begins to miss the American way of life. It is the little things—simple things—like crossing the street with at least a reasonable expectation of reaching the other side alive. It was only today that we learned the Caesar’s hidden meaning when he said “the die is cast” when he crossed the Rubicon.

Here we are at the airport in rome leaving for Venice (we forgot to take pictures the whole time we were in rome).
What is the difference between a dead tourist in the road and a dead Roman? There is no difference—no skid marks in front of either. There are no traffic laws in Rome—only very loose guidelines. Things like braking for red lights and pedestrians and staying on the right side of the road are considered old fashioned conventions applicable only to lesser mortals. When we asked our driver why he was driving on the wrong side of the road, he replied “because there are too many cars on the right side”. Ask a silly question.

We spent most of the day recuperating from yesterday’s shopping. Kerensa realized that she forgot to get a red bag to go with her Gucci red shoes. If you are asking why she didn’t carry another bag instead you are exhibiting the same lack of fashion consciousness that Herb displayed.

October 30 Thursday

Arrivederci Roma. Salve Venice. Water, water, everywhere, and not a street to drive in. We took a water taxi to the Cipriani Hotel and were not prepared for either the cold or rain. All of our appropriate clothes had been sent home with Keith! Well, that is just another reason (along with red shoes) for Kerensa to go shopping.

Shortly after arriving, Kerensa disclosed her plan to move Herb’s sports gear to the attic to make room for her new cloths. “Small price to pay for the woman you love,” Herb thought as he reconsidered Kerensa’s request to move into a larger abode.

Oh, by the way, this is our one week anniversary. We celebrated at a local restaurant.

October 31 Friday
Oh, those red shoes we bought in Rome? Well, one must have a red Fendi purse to match. So off we go shopping! Then pizza at a local establishment followed by a drink at Harry’s Bar. There, at the corner table, sat Hemingway’s ghost and at that moment a church bell rang — we wondered for whom the bell tolled.

Venice is wet and wonderful. It was by water taxi that we arrived at the shopping district and there was a chill in the air for which we were ill prepared. A slight drizzle set the mood. We wandered the town searching for our evening meal at Quadri’s. Following dinner, we made our way back to the hotel by water taxi.

November 1 Saturday
Rain and chill caused us to stay in the hotel all day. (We did use our private outdoor hot tub.) That night we dined at Cipriani Restaurant at the hotel. We discussed True Beginnings and the results that we had received on the compatibility test. We were excited to use the new business to help other couples find what we ourselves had found.
